Bless his heart. (If you spent much time in the south, you know what’s coming next.) Bless his heart, he meant well. My husband was totally lame at tea parties. After my third son was born, Michael promised to have tea parties with me. I loved my pretty pots and cups, however, I had no little girls to share them with. Our boys were bulls in a china shop. They were not getting near my beloved teacups. Therefore, Mike would sit with a pinkie at attention and have tea with me. It really was just a Cup of Love, not really tea at all.
A Cup of Love Pattern
We have a perfect February project for you. It’s free for a limited time, an instant download, and you’ll be able to share a Cup of Love with someone you love too. (Girlfriends, daughters, and granddaughters are much better at the tea party thing. Just saying.) This mini table topper is 19″ square. The rosy red batik fabric is from the Material Girlfriends Collection, R06 Primo Batiks by Marcus Fabrics.
Let me share how easy it is to make. It sure doesn’t take much fabric. This is what you’ll need.
- 1/3 yard Red Batik, the sample used Material Girlfriends Collection, R06 Primo Batik #2329-0111 by Marcus Fabrics
- 1/4 yard white, the sample used Marshmallow Solid #5901-0733 by Marcus Fabrics
- 1/4 yard solid pink for appliqué and inner border
- 1/4 yard binding (more than plenty, you really can do it with 5″ x WOF)
- 3/4 yard backing
Since the mugs are from 5″ squares, you could also pull a few cool prints from a charm pack you bought and didn’t know what you were going to use it for. 😉 The next step is to trim those 5″ squares to 4″ x 5″. Save that 1″ strip for the handle. Sew two little squares on the bottom two corners. Stitch diagonal, trim, and press. They look like little red diapers without their corners triangles pressed out.
Next, sew a rectangle of white background fabric to the top of the cups and appliqué the hearts in the middle.
Lora complained loudly about the tiny handle piecing. Ha! The handle block is indeed painstakingly small when you’re used to 12″ block piecing.
Once your blocks are made and arranged, it is sewn together like a 9-patch. Sew on your inner and outer borders and you’re ready to quilt this mini table topper!
My directions are far too vague! Let’s get you a real pattern download, available until June 2022. Download expired.
A Cup of Love Kit
We have kits available too! Kit includes all fabrics for the front and binding just as shown in the pictures, and a copy of the pattern. Does not include coffee, tea, cupcakes, roses, batting, or backing. A Cup of Love Kit, $19.99
Our sons have grown up to become three handsome young gentlemen. My hope is that someday, they too will have a cup of love, pinky at attention, with their beloveds.
