Celebrate September with the 3YD Mike Quilt
September is a special month in our home — it’s my husband Mike’s birthday! This year we celebrated a milestone, his 60th birthday. Mike has been my biggest cheerleader through every quilt design, fabric mess, and late-night binding session. He has folded and bagged the majority of the Material Girlfriends patterns too! It only felt right that a quilt should carry his name — and what better time to launch the 3YD Mike Quilt than in honor of his birthday month?
Free Pattern: 3YD Mike Quilt
To celebrate, we’re sharing the 3YD Mike Quilt pattern as a free download from September 15–30. Like all our Three Yard Quilts, this one is simple, quick, and fun to make. All you need is three fabrics — a light, medium, and dark (one yard of each) — and you’ll have a throw-sized quilt ready to gift, snuggle, or showcase in your home.

Don’t miss your chance to grab this free pattern — it’s our birthday gift to you! 🎁 Check out the 2025 Sew Along page for “How To”s and color inspiration for 3YD Mike! Download link expired 9/30/25.
Do you love the color combination as much as we do? We made 3YD Mike from Hoffman batiks and created kits. Each kits include 3 1/2 yards, 1 yard of each of light, medium and dark batiks. We always include a 1/2 yard of binding in our kits too (dark green stripe batik). The kit doesn’t include the pattern, backing or batting.
Cozy Up with Fall Quilts
September also signals the start of quilting season. The air cools, the colors turn golden, and fabric practically calls us back to our sewing rooms. We have so many fall-inspired quilt patterns that bring the warmth of autumn right into your home.
From leaf-filled designs to rich, harvest-toned colorways, there’s a fall quilt waiting to inspire your next project. Whether you want something scrappy and cozy or sleek and modern, fall is the perfect season to start stitching.

Come See Us in Pleasanton!
We’re also excited to share that Material Girlfriends will be vending at the Quilt, Craft, & Sewing Festival at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, CA on September 25–27.
We’ll be in a 10′ x 40′ booth, packed full of quilts, patterns, and kits. Best of all, admission is free! Come enjoy shopping with lots of vendors, chances to win prizes, and a great day out surrounded by creativity.
If you’re local (or even if you just want a road trip), we’d love for you to stop by and say hello. Nothing makes us happier than meeting quilters in person and sharing our passion for fabric and design.

The Power of 15 Minutes
Life is busy, and it can feel hard to set aside time for quilting. There are weeks that go by that my machine doesn’t get turned on. Truth. But here’s a gentle reminder: even 15 minutes a day adds up. Sew a few seams, cut a few squares, or press your blocks. Those little moments create progress, and before you know it, you’ve got a quilt top ready to finish. Besides, the sense of completion will give you an endorphin hit. Who could say no to that?
This month, why not use your 15 minutes a day to sew along with us on the 3YD Mike quilt? I’ve been working on machine binding – the whole kit and caboodle. I’ve fallen too far behind on my binding and need to spare my hands a bit. Hand stitching to the back is the most beautiful and definitely preferred. However, sometimes machine stitching is ‘good enough’. I’ve been trying different methods. I like the results I get from using a small, yet long, zig-zag stitch. I sew the binding to the back, roll over and zig-zag to the front. I’ve been pleased with the results.
