Some people say, “It’s just a quilt.”
But we know better.
Every stitch carries something more — a memory, a prayer, a silent message of love. Quilting allows us to transform our care for others into something they can hold, wrap around themselves, or pass on. It’s love made visible.
Whether we’re making a quilt for family, a friend, or a complete stranger, it’s an act of giving that blesses both the maker and the receiver.
If you’re ready to stitch a little love into someone’s life, we’ve got patterns designed exactly for that — quick finishes, meaningful gifts, and designs that wrap your heart right into every seam. Take a look — your next gift quilt might be waiting for you.
We have over 100 Material Girlfriends patterns. But wait, I’ve the perfect pattern for you this month and…
It’s free.
Introducing 3YD Foxtrot
Do you need a quick project to squeeze in before summer ends? This month’s free download is a fun, easy-to-stitch quilt with a mid-century modern twist!
Introducing our August Free Pattern, a 40″ x 60″ throw-size quilt made from just three 1-yard cuts—one light, one medium, and one dark fabric. The block features a retro vibe with sleek, geometric style, perfect for quilters who appreciate both timeless and trendy designs.
Click August 15 Sew Along post and scroll to the bottom of the August 15 post for the download link. The 3YD Foxtrot pattern free download is available from August 15 through 31.
Our sample quilt uses rich brown, golden yellow, and cream batiks that really highlight the retro flair. But don’t stop there—this pattern plays well with florals, solids, modern prints, or batiks. Choose your favorite trio and let your style shine.
The best part? It’s beginner-friendly! The block construction is simple and straightforward—ideal for new quilters or seasoned quilters looking for a relaxing project. Whether this is your first quilt or your fortieth, this pattern has all the ease and charm of a summer breeze.

Want your quilt to look like the sample? We have a beautiful 3-yard kit plus an additional 1/2 yard of solid gold for the binding available here. Enjoy free shipping on all orders over $40. Pattern is not included in our 3 1/2-yard fabric bundles.
My Quilting Buddy
This is Addy, our red border collie, doing her best to “help” me sew the binding on the 3YD Foxtrot quilt. She decided to stretch out right on top of my binding—probably because her gorgeous golden-yellow eyes and redish-brown fur were the perfect match to the quilt’s brown, gold, and cream batiks. Plus, it was right at my feet, her favorite place to be.
Do you have a special quilting buddy like Addy? Ready to hold down the fabric, rearrange your blocks, keep you company, or just look adorable while you work?
Meet our “supervisors,” always ready to keep our fabric warm, test the coziness of a quilt, or “help” rearrange blocks. The first two quilting buddies belong to me, then our mother, Carolyn’s, Boston terrier, Lora’s two cairns, and two of our girlfriends’ quilting hounds.

Now we want to see your quilting buddy! 🧵 Post a photo on our Material Girlfriends Facebook Group and introduce us to your furry (or feathered, scaley… or human!) sidekick.
Going to the Dogs
Yes, I, too, cringe when a dog gets on one of my nice (expensive and time-consuming) quilts. Not all of my quilts are meant for my quilting buddies, but our “family” throw size quilts are pet friendly. My three-yard quilts are a low investment in time and money. I love snuggling with my canines, and a three yard quilt is perfect for our daily ritual. I have even made quilts specifically for our family dogs. (They were past the chewing stage, mind you.)
Miss Pepper was the inspiration for our Scruffy Pup pattern.
Enjoy 50% off Scruffy Pup, our favorite dog quilt pattern. Make it for a sweet little child or your own scruffy pup. (I apologize that I didn’t get around to making the kitty version.) Quilt size is 40″ x 40″. The pattern includes three pup appliqués to choose from: Accuquilt, raw-edge fusible (on the cover), and hand appliqué options.

We did give them a new head shot photo but they use an old one. Lora is on the left and I’m on the right. (eye-roll)

Greetings! The Foxtrot quilt may be the answer for an wasy quilt for my daughter. She likes black, white and teal/turquoise colors together. Any sugestions for fabric choices. Her style is “Classic”. Like Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy. Or if you have a better quilt design I’d be happy for reccomendations. I really have a hard time selecting fabrics. Also, do you have a pattern for a ladies bike I could use for the 12″x12′ block pattern, It could be larger as well. I want to make some form of a quilt for a friend that rode 700 miles on a bkike with her husband for fun. It was from South Dakota to southern Wisconsin in 10 days. Any fabric suggestions are appreciated. I hope you don’t mind that I’m asking you for help/suggestions. You two just seem like those kind of people who would enjoy this kind of task. My sincerest gratitude, Michele from Northern VA.
Hi Michele, My sister is a color expert (literally has a degree and certification in color) and she creates our 3 Yard fabric kits, all our kits in fact. I’d recommend checking out her collections of fabrics in our online store here and see if anything tickles your fancy.https://www.materialgirlfriendsshop.com/3yd-patterns-and-fabrics
