December 2022
This is it. The grand finalé is here. Was it just me or did this year just fly by? Our twelve and final Quilters’ Color Therapy Sew Along is Sunday, December 18, 1-3PM Pacific Time. The Zoom link will be emailed Friday, December 16 in the afternoon. If you didn’t receive your link, email Lisa@materialgirlfriends.com and I’ll send it to you.
We have a LOT to cover on the 18th. Join us for the Zoom session to learn more on the color psychology for LIME, plus our background colors, White, Gray, and Black. We’re going to record a small portion of this Zoom session. We want to share the instructions for putting together the quilt top. I’ll post that video below after it is recorded and edited. During the Zoom session, we will briefly cover the piecing for Block E and, last but not least, Block F. All the blocks have a video tutorial on our Youtube channel, Material Girlfriends Patterns. Download the instructions for Blocks E and F by clicking on the link below.
Download the instructions for piecing the quilt top by clicking on the link below.
Fabric Requirements
To Make Blocks E and F, you’ll need:
- 1 fat sixth of Green (Color 1), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat sixth of Turquoise (Color 2), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat quarter of Blue (Color 3), approximately 18″ x 21″
- 1 fat sixth of Background (Black or white, Color 4) approximately 12″ x 21″

Fabrics listed above are for both blocks. You may pre-cut your blocks if you wish. Cutting instructions will be on pages 33 and 34 in Quilters’ Color Therapy book.
If you use the Accuquilt cutter, lucky you! Both blocks can be cut from the 8″ qube. Scroll down to March to find the dies used.
See you all sewn!
November
Wow! We’re nearing the end of this BOM adventure. How did we arrive at the second to last meeting already? Our eleventh meeting is Sunday, November 27, 1-3PM Pacific Time. The Zoom link will be emailed Friday, November 26 in the afternoon. If you didn’t receive your link email Lisa@materialgirlfriends.com and I’ll send one out to you.
Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and then Cyber Monday – the crazy part of the holidays is in full swing. CraZy TiMes! Never fear, Turquoise is here! Turquoise to the rescue. Turquoise possess the unique quality of balance. It reflects calmness and peace. Breath in…breath out.
Join us for the Zoom session to find out more on the psychology of TURQUOISE, as well as construction tips for Blocks C and D for the last quadrant. If this is repeat session for you, just hang with us during the color part of the lesson. If you’ve not mastered these two blocks, we’re here to assist and sew along with you.
Fabric Requirements
To make Blocks C and D, you’ll need:
- 1 fat sixth of Green (Color 1), approximately 12” x 21”
- 1 fat sixth of Turquoise (Color 2), approximately 12” x 21”
- 1 fat sixth of Lime (Color 3), approximately 12” x 21”
- 1 fat quarter of Black (Color 4), approximately 18” x 21”
Fabrics listed are for both blocks. You may pre-cut your blocks if you wish. Cutting instructions will be on pages 30 and 31 in Quilters’ Color Therapy book.
Do you have an AccuQuilt machine? It’s not required but sure fun to have. Here are the dies you can use to cut your pieces for Block C. From the 12″ qube, use die 55001 to cut the large 6 1/2″ triangle. From the 12″ qube, use die 55703 for the smaller 3 1/2″ triangles and die 55701 to cut the 3 1/2″ squares. Block C is the only block that uses the 12″ qube dies. The other blocks will use the dies from the 8″ qube.
To cut the fabrics for Block D, you can use the dies from the 8″ qube. Use die 55712 triangles to make the 2 1/2″ Half Square Triangles and the center Square-in-a-Square unit. Use die 55709 for the 2 1/2″ squares. Use die 55713 for the square on point in the Square-in-a-Square unit. One snag. Die 55714 won’t work for the parallel Flying Geese body, it’s too narrow. Yes, I tried it. So, you can cut and sew them like the pattern or combine two Half Square Triangles to get the same look.
October
We are checking off our tenth meeting Sunday, October 30, 1-3 PM Pacific Time. The Zoom link will be emailed Friday, October 28. If you didn’t receive your link, email Lisa@materialgirlfriends.com and I’ll send you one. The Sew Along is free and you can jump in anytime since the blocks repeat. More program info is below. Just keep scrolling.
This meeting I will be solo io! That’s Italian for just me. My sister, Lora, her husband Kelly, and my parents are in Rome! The nerve leaving me behind, right? As it was, the first week they were gone I caught Covid. Fortunately, they dodged that bullet and have been touring healthy and happy. I am now fully recovered (what a beast of a flu!). It took 13 days until I finally tested negative. Whew! Happy to be out and about again. Fortunately for me, session 10 is on GREEN. Green is a color that reflects healing.
Color your world GREEN to relieve stress and anxiety. Green also evokes security, self-reliance (solo io), tranquility, and peace. It is a restful and relaxing to the eye. It has positive cognitive outcomes, improves memory, and constructive thinking. Cool fun fact, the human eye can differentiate more shades of green than any other color.
Join us for the Zoom session to find out more on the psychology of GREEN, as well as construction tips for Blocks A and B. Blocks A and B have been around the block a couple times, January, April, and July to be exact. These two blocks are beautiful and fun to make. Plus, this will be the last Blocks A and B that we will construct for the quilt! (I think I heard a collective cheer regarding Block A.) If this is repeat session for you, just hang with us during the color part of the lesson. If you’ve not mastered these two blocks, I’m here to assist and hang-out with you.
Fabric Requirements for Blocks A and B
To Make Block A and Block B, you’ll need:
- 1 fat sixth of Green (Color 1), approximately 12” x 21”
- 1 fat quarter of Turquoise (Color 2), approximately 18” x 21”
- 1 fat sixth of Lime (Color 3), approximately 12” x 21”
- 1 fat quarter of Black (Color 4), approximately 18” x 21”
Fabrics listed above are for both blocks. You may pre-cut your blocks if you wish. Cutting instructions will be on pages 28 and 29 in Quilters’ Color Therapy book, or the digital download button above for Blocks A and B.
Do you use an Accuquilt machine for cutting? Well, I’ve good news for you. From the 8″ Block qube, you can cut out Block A by using dies 5 and 6. You can cut out Block B by using dies 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8.
September
Ninth and counting. Our eighth meeting is Sunday, September 25, 1-3 PM Pacific time. The Zoom link will be emailed Friday, September 23. If you didn’t receive your Zoom link email Lisa@materialgirlfriends.com and I’ll send you one. This time I made the Zoom link valid for the rest of the year. I’ll still send it each month, but the link will work for all meetings. The Sew Along is free and you can jump in any time since the blocks repeat. More program info is below… way below. BLUE! My favorite color. Ever and always. Not to uncommon, Blue is the whole world’s favorite color. Okay, not really, but it is the number one ‘favorite color’. We’re number one! We’re number one! We’re number one! This blue-blooded quilter won a blue ribbon for singing the blues on a blue Monday under a blue moon wearing blue suede shoes. *Snap* Okay, I’ve gone too far. Reeling it in a bit.
Join us for the Zoom session to find out more on the psychology of BLUE, as well as construction tips for Blocks E and F. E and F have been around the block a couple times, March and June to be exact. These two blocks are beautiful and fun to make.
August
Eighth Meeting is on August 28, 1-3 PM Pacific Time. The Zoom link will be emailed Friday, August 26. If you didn’t receive your Zoom link email Lisa@materialgirlfriends.com and I’ll send you one. The Sew Along is free and you can jump in any time since the blocks repeat. More program info is below… way below. Just keep scrolling.
Purple! I read a quote that said, “Don’t Worry, be Purple.” How true, purple is the opposite of worry. It is a problems solving color, an “I can do this” color. If you know you’re going to have a challenging day, wear purple. And then sew purple.
Join us for the Zoom session to find out more on the psychology of Purple, as well as Blocks C and D. We made these blocks in February and May already but now we get to create them in Indigo, Purple, and Blue. If you can’t join us Sunday via the Zoom meeting, check out our YouTube Channel for the videos or visit our Tutorial Website for videos and additional support.

The sew along is free and you can jump in any time since the blocks repeat. More program info is below… way below.
Indigo! I love the sound of that word. Indigo. In. Di. Go. Gorgeous color too. It has been triple digit heat, here in Discovery Bay and this cool royal purplish blue is just the right color to trick me into feeling it is cooler than it the really is. We’ll dive deep into this cool blue on Sunday. Indigo is idealistic, noble, promotes relaxation and creative thought. Just what I need. What about you? How does Indigo make you feel? I look forward to hearing your thoughts on Sunday.
Join us for the Zoom session to find out more on the psychology of Indigo, as well as Blocks A and B. We made these blocks in January and April already but now we get to create them in Indigo, Purple, and Blue. If you can’t join us Sunday via the Zoom meeting, check out our YouTube Channel for the videos or visit our Tutorial Website for videos and additional support.

“Knock Knock.” says Lora.
Lisa rolls her eyes. “Who’s there?”
“Banana.”
“Banana, who?” as she looks over her glasses.
“Knock, knock.”
“Who’s there?” Another eye roll because the joke isn’t that funny.
“Banana.”
“Banana, who?”
“Knock, knock.”
“Oh my gosh, Lora.”
“Just do it.”
“Fine. Who’s there?” obliges Lisa.
“Orange, who?”
“Orange.”
“Orange you glad I didn’t say Banana?”
The giant eye roll got stuck momentarily in the back of Lisa’s head, but the eyeballs eventually came around. 😉
ORANGE You Glad?
Love it? Or leave it? We have found that Orange is one of those colors that some people really love or really hate. That Orange fence is what divides our camp as well. Lora LOVES orange. Gag me with an orangesycle stick. If you red it up enough to be coral, I love it. But straight, unfiltered, unmuted, is unloved by me. I actually had to “borrow” oranges from Lora’s extensive orange stash for my scrappy Quilters’ Color Therapy project. So how do you feel about Orange? I can’t wait to hear which side of the Orange fence you live on.
Join us for the Zoom session to find out more on the psychology of Orange, as well as Blocks E and F. We made these blocks in March already but now we get to create them in Pink, Red, and Orange. If you can’t join us Sunday via the Zoom meeting, check out our YouTube Channel for the videos or visit our Tutorial Website for videos and additional support.
Fabric Requirements for Block E and Block F
To make both Block E and Block F, you’ll need:
- 1 fat sixth of Red (Color 1), approximately 12” x 21”
- 1 fat sixth of Pink (Color 2), approximately 12” x 21”
- 1 fat quarter of Orange (Color 3), approximately 18” x 21”
- 1 fat sixth of Black (Color 4), approximately 12” x 21”
Fabrics listed above are for both blocks. You may pre-cut your blocks if you wish. Cutting instructions will be on pages 33 and 34 in Quilters’ Color Therapy book.
If you use the Accuquilt cutter, lucky you! Both blocks can be cut from the 8″ qube. Scroll down to March to find the dies used.
See you Zoom!
May
Fifth Meeting is on May 29, 2022, 1-3 PM Pacific Time. I’m really looking forward to seeing you all via Zoom. It’s been a very busy month and I can’t wait to give you a sneak peek at some fabric I’ve been designing for Marcus Fabrics. And none of it is Pink. What!? Pink is our color of focus for the May meeting. I love pink. Pink is the most calming and gentle of all colors. I need a bath in pink. “Calgon, take me away.” Remember those tv adds from the 80s? The Zoom link will be emailed Friday, May 27. If you didn’t receive your Zoom link email, contact Lisa@materialgirlfriends.com and I send you one. The sew along is free and you can jump in any time since the blocks repeat. More program info is below… just keep scrolling.
PINK Power
Not only will be indulging in Pink on Sunday, May 29, we will also be giving tips on constructing Block C and Block D. We’ve made these blocks during the February meeting but now we get to make them again in a new color way. f you’re not able to join us for the Zoom sessions, don’t despair. We have Blocks A-F video tutorials ready for watching. Visit our YouTube Channel for the videos or visit our Tutorial Website for videos and additional support.
Fabric Requirements for Block C and Block D
To make both Block C and Block D, you’ll need:
- 1 fat sixth of Red (Color 1), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat sixth of Pink (Color 2), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat sixth of Orange (Color 3), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat quarter of background (Color 4), approximately 18″ x 21″. Represented as Black in the diagrams.
The fabrics listed above are enough for both blocks. You may pre-cut your blocks if you wish. Cutting instructions will be on pages 30 and 31 in Quilters’ Color Therapy book. I’m making my quilt scrappy with white backgrounds. Lora is making her’s out of solids but instead of the black background, she is choosing a charcoal gray.
Accuquilt Die Cutter
See you Zoom!
April
Fourth Meeting is on April 24, 2022, 1-3 PM Pacific Time. We’re sew excited! Can’t wait! Zoom link will be emailed April 22, late afternoon. Contact Lisa@materialgirlfriends.com if you didn’t receive your Zoom link email. (If you haven’t registered yet, go to materialgirlfriendsshop.com. It’s free. Jump in anytime and join us for our monthly Zoom workshop. More program info is below…way below… just keep scrolling.)
Seeing RED
Literally. Red is a passionate, energetic, blood-pumping color. Let’s dive into Red together on Sunday, April 24. We will also be giving our accuracy tips. We’re repeated Block A and Block B from January but in new quadrant colors. If you jumped in after January, or you struggled with your points or alignment for Block A and/or Block B, you’ll not want to miss out.
If you’re not able to join us for the Zoom sessions, don’t despair. We have Blocks A-F video tutorials ready for watching. Visit our YouTube Channel for the videos or visit our Tutorial Website for videos and additional support.
Fabric Requirements for Block A and Block B
To make both Block A and Block B, you’ll need:
- 1 fat sixth of Red (Color 1), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat quarter of Pink (Color 2), approximately 18″ x 21″
- 1 fat sixth of Orange (Color 3), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat quarter of background (Color 4), approximately 18″ x 21″. Represented as Black in the diagrams.
Fabric amounts listed are generous but not crazy generous. Remember to cut your largest pieces first. Pre-cutting before the Zoom is always fine. We’ll be giving instructions on how to assemble these lovely blocks as well as talk on the psychology of red. We have our monthly therapy project to talk about and we’ll be review red/pink/orange fabric choices and any questions you may have.
Do you use an Accuquilt machine for cutting? Well, I’ve good news for you. From the 8″ Block qube, you can cut out Block A by using dies 5 and 6. You can cut out Block B by using dies 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8.
March
Third Meeting is on March 27, 2022, 1-3 PM Pacific Time. Woohoo! I can’t wait. Zoom link will be emailed March 25 in the evening.
We will be talking about the lovely color of Toffee, Mocha, Coffee, Cinnamon, Chocolate, Russet, Cocoa, or… in other words, Brown. The Yellow/Gold/Toffee quadrant is almost done! We just have two blocks to complete. We will be constructing Blocks E and F. If you didn’t purchase the Quilters’ Color Therapy Book.
Fabric Requirements for Block E and Block F
To make both Block E and Block F, you’ll need:
- 1 fat sixth of Yellow (Color 1), approximately 12” x 21”
- 1 fat sixth of Gold (Color 2), approximately 12” x 21”
- 1 fat quarter of Toffee (Color 3), approximately 18” x 21”
- 1 fat sixth of Black (Color 4), approximately 12” x 21”
Fabrics listed above are generous but not crazy generous. Remember to cut your largest pieces first. Pre-cutting before the Zoom is always fine. We’ll be giving instructions on how to assemble these lovely blocks as well as talk on the psychology of brown (or Toffee). But there’s more, we have our monthly therapy project to talk about (a cute car pillow – perfect size) and we’ll be talking about collecting your fabrics for the next quadrant, red, pink, and orange.
AccuQuilt
Standard cutting instructions are in the book and pattern download above. However, if you use an AccuQuilt machine to cut your pieces, you can use the 8″ qube to cut Block E and Block F. For Block E, five of the units are the Square-in-a-Square which are the same dies you used for Block A. Use Dies 5 [#55712] with Yellow (4), Black (8), and Gold (16). Use Die 6 [#55713] with Toffee (5). The Corner Square Triangle units in the four corners, use Die 2 [#55709] once with Black because you only need four squares. Use Die 3 [#55710] twice for four Yellow triangles. Sew’r up.
For Block F, you’re repeating the Corner Square Triangle unit. Get these dies back out of the box, Die 2 [#55709] with Toffee (4) and Die 3 [#55710] with Gold (4) and Die 5 [#55712] with Black (6). The Split Quarter Square Triangle is made from Die 3 [#55710] with Yellow (4) and Die 4 [#55711] with Black and Brown, just once because you only need four of each. The center square can be cut using Die 1 [#55708] in Black. Wow! We almost used every die in the 8″ qube for these two blocks. Just two were left in the box.
In review, Blocks A, B, most of D, E, and F can be cut out of the 8″ qube. The only die not used out of the 8″ qube was Die 7. We went off the rails for Block C. It can be made from the 12″ qube. Block D had a Parallel Flying Geese that we couldn’t make from the Dies in the 8″ qube. Not too bad. I’m happy with my 8″ qube’s ability so far!
If you’re interested in purchasing the Quilters’ Color Therapy Book, the link is below. Thank you!
February
Second Meeting is on February 27, 2022, 1pm Pacific Time. Zoom link emailed February 25 evening. Contact Lisa@materialgirlfriends.com if you didn’t receive your Zoom link email. (If you haven’t registered yet, go to materialgirlfriendsshop.com. It’s free. Jump in anytime and join us for our monthly Zoom workshop. More program info is below.)
Yay! It’s our second meeting. Have you been soaking up the yellow. Touching, loving, observing happy yellow all month long? Me too. Our next color to revel in is GOLD. We will be building Block C and Block D.
Fabric Requirements for Block C and Block D
To make both Block C and Block D, you’ll need:
- 1 fat sixth of Yellow (Color 1), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat quarter of Gold (Color 2), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat sixth of Toffee (Color 3), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat quarter of background (Color 4), approximately 18″ x 21″. Represented as Black in the diagrams.
The fabric listed above is enough for both blocks. You may pre-cut your blocks if you wish. Cutting instructions will be on pages 30 and 31 in Quilters’ Color Therapy book, or the digital download button above for Blocks C and D. I’m making my quilt scrappy with white backgrounds. Lora is making her’s out of solids but instead of the black background, she is choosing a charcoal gray.
AccuQuilt
Snap. You got this.
A book of Quilters’ Color Therapy is available at the button below. The book includes the information on the color psychology, additional color therapy projects, all the blocks for the 87″ queen quilt top, and quilt top assembly – the whole enchilada in a pretty cover.
Biggest Goes First
A good rule for quilters, when cutting out your pieces for a quilt top, cut the largest pieces first. If you should miscut, you still have fabric to recut and you can use the mis-cut piece for smaller pieces. If you’re sewing from your stash, it is best to cut your largest pieces first because we’re limited on our big chunks of fabric. The largest pieces on a quilt top are generally the border, setting and corner triangles, and sashing amounts. Here are the largest pieces you’ll need to cut for your 87″ queen size quilt. Cut these now and you’ll know how loosey-goosey you can be with the rest of your fabrics. The fabric call-outs are generous but not crazy generous.
January
First Meeting is on January 30, 2022, 1 -3 pm Pacific Time. Zoom link emailed January 28 evening. Contact Lisa@materialgirlfriends.com if you didn’t receive your Zoom link email. (If you haven’t registered yet, go to materialgirlfriendsshop.com. It’s free. Jump in anytime and join us for our monthly Zoom workshop. More program info is below.)
We’re sew excited for the first meeting. We will be talking about YELLOW and building Block A and Block B.
Fabric Requirements for Block A and Block B
To make both Block A and Block B, you’ll need:
- 1 fat sixth of Yellow (Color 1), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat quarter of Gold (Color 2), approximately 18″ x 21″
- 1 fat sixth of Toffee (Color 3), approximately 12″ x 21″
- 1 fat quarter of background (Color 4), approximately 18″ x 21″. Represented as Black in the diagrams.
The fabric listed above is enough for both blocks. You may pre-cut your blocks if you wish. I’m making my quilt scrappy with white backgrounds. Lora is making her’s out of solids but instead of the black background, she is choosing a charcoal gray. I can’t wait to see what you’ve chosen.
Accuquilt
Do you use an Accuquilt machine for cutting? Well, I’ve good news for you. From the 8″ Block qube, you can cut out Block A by using dies 5 and 6. You can cut out Block B by using dies 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8.
Lisa’s Stash
These pretty fabrics are what I pulled from my stash to make the Yellow/Gold/Toffee blocks. I’ll keep them in this basket until we’ve completed the yellow/gold/toffee quadrant in the next three sessions. Then I’ll put my left-overs away and collect my next quadrant’s colors. No need to pull everything at once. We can enjoy this project one month at a time.

Program Information
Quilters’ Color Therapy, The Use of Color Psychology in Quilting is an informative Block of the Month Pattern Booklet by Lora W. Zmak and Lisa W. Norton, the Material Girlfriends.
Color Psychology is the study of color’s impact on human behavior. Color and its effects on the brain, and on an individual’s behavior, have been studied for years by various groups from scientists to marketers. Your personal feelings of color are rooted deeply in your upbringing, experiences, culture, age, gender, and situational factors. The meanings of colors are going to fluctuate and change as you do. With this QCT Sew Along, learn to use Color Psychology purposefully to help you feel and express your emotions through color and quilting. Follow the 12 monthly sessions with us to create an 87in x 87in colorful quilt or don’t. The booklet and quilt project are totally optional and the monthly Zoom workshops are FREE.
Each monthly session includes a lesson on a color, technique instructions for the blocks from the booklet, plus an optional Color project. These mini projects are for digging deeper into color therapy and encouraging quilters to develop self-care through personal small projects. For example, green is an anti-anxiety color. At this moment, green fabrics would be emotionally beneficial for me to work with.

You can join us anytime during the year. Registration won’t close after the first Zoom meeting. Since the blocks repeat, you’ll have a few Zoom opportunities to catch up on the block construction. Each month we’ll be focusing on a specific color. January, we’ll be talking about Yellow. February, we’ll be talking about.. nope, not red, Gold! March we will be talking about Toffee. We’ll work our way around the calendar and the quilt, one color lesson each month.

I’m using my stash for this QCT Sew Along. I will use scrappy colors and scrappy white backgrounds. I don’t know what Lora chose to do. What will you decide? I can’t wait to see it!
What do I need for the first meeting?
For the first Zoom workshop, January 30, 1 pm, you will need nothing. However, The Quilters Color Therapy booklet would be helpful and if you’d like to sew the first blocks with us, you’ll need some yellow, gold, and brown fabrics. Fabric requirements for the whole quilt are in the image below. You’ll need 2/3 yards of the 12 colors, plus 6 1/3 yards of your background choice.

Print this page as a helpful color guide. It’s page 2 in the booklet. The yardage amounts shown are for the entire quilt. Since I’ll be making mine scrappy, I’ll have a total of 2/3 yards of a variety of prints for each color and a total of 6 1/3 yards of a variety of creams.
Let me know of any questions!
Lisa Norton
