I don’t know what it is about the fall but, all of a sudden I’m in a rush to get my unfinished quilt projects completed. Do you get this way, too? I’ve been planning, organizing, cutting, and sewing way more than I normally do. Is it because I know the New Year is approaching, and I want to start it with new projects? Or have I been so busy with Material Girlfriends designs that I just want to get my hands into MY quilting projects? Or is it the weather? Now that it is cool outside, am I ready to mentally hibernate in my rolling chair next to the soothing hum of my sewing machine? Probably a combination. What do you think? Whatever the cause, I am in a fall fervor to sew.
We had our last show of the year a couple of weeks ago, and Lora and I have been planning our 2026 line-up. Our New Year line-up begins with the January 21-24 Road to California show in Ontario, California. Before planning our new year, we needed to review what worked well for the old year.
Looking Over 2025
We wrote and produced a new pattern every month for our free downloads during the last two years. We were happy with all that we produced, and our pattern distributor was thrilled. It was a lot of rewarding work, yet we’re both ready for a change. No, not that kind of change. We’re not ready to swap our cotton for yarn. I’ve been itching to do more appliqué designs. I miss designing sampler-style Block of the Month quilts. A row-by-row style quilt pattern is also on my design wish list. Keep an eye on our Facebook group page, Material Girlfriends Quilting Gang. I’d like to throw out a poll or two to get some feedback on our 2026 Sew Along plans.
Back to the Present
We can’t just linger in the past! We have a new pattern to download! Introducing, 3YD Sierra. Finally. This design was created earlier this year, and I had anticipated it for months. I was excited to sew this one up.

Brace yourself. It is foundation paper-pieced. I can hear you groaning from here! There is a minority of quilters who are excited, though. Don’t fret, you majority. Lora and I made a Beginner Foundation Paper-Piecing video for you.
The video teaches EASY and BASIC paper-piecing techniques to create the Tall Triangle. It is a quick 10 minute YouTube tutorial, 5 minutes if you hit the 2x button. Ha! Click the 2025 Sew Along page link to watch the video, see 3YD Sierra in different fabric samples, and to download the 3YD Sierra pattern.
Sorry, you missed the free download. Link expired 11/30/2025. For a printed copy, visit our online shop or for a digital download, Material Girlfriends’ Etsy shop.
Having Foundation Fits
If foundation paper-piecing puts you into fits, there are other ways to make the Tall Triangle units that create those cute pine trees. Rob Appell and Tiffany Hayes of Stitchin’ Heaven have a tutorial showing you how to use templates to create the Tall Triangle block. It’s just that you have to buy the templates. You’ll need a template for the 6″ finished size instead of the 4″ one demoed. But wait. How long have you been quilting? How many quilt shows have you been to? You may already have Tall Triangle templates in your ruler stash. I did! Ha! But I still prefer the paper-pieced method. If you don’t know how to use the triangles you already have in your stash, Google search a tutorial!
If you make the 6″ Tall Triangle units using a different method than the foundation paper-piecing, recalculate the fabric you’ll need. I did the block math for the 3-Yard kit using the foundation paper-piecing method. You may need more fabric – or less!
The 3YD Sierra quilt was created using this kit. I love how my frosty trees turned out! The kit includes a yard each of Dark, Medium, and Light as shown above. We also include 1/2 yard of binding (blue with light blue squares). $45.99 plus Free Shipping!
